In 1535, Hernan Cortes visited for the first
time the Baja Peninsula, baptizing the bay as
Bahia de la Santa Cruz (Bay of the Holy Cross).
|
|
Many attempts for settlements followed to that
first visit, but all failed due to ferocious
attacks from the nomadic natives and the harsh
and unforgiving enviroment, and finally much
later, with the arrival of missionaries a settlement
succeeded, receiving the modern name of La Paz,
from Sebastian Vizcaino, in 1596. |
|
Along the years, conquerors, pirates, entrepreneurs
and missionaries created a past full of history
and unparalleled charm. |
